Just been to the Post Office to see if they have any rupees. They said India prefers you to buy them there in Sterling.... and that they don't like their currency to be let out of the country.

Being Indian and just having come back from India, you can take rupees out of the country but they are worthless. I’ve got a few lakh rupee’s here will keep them until I go back to India

Haven't been to India for ages but you couldn't take rupees out of the country then.

There were branches of my bank in the major population centres of Sri Lanka, which is why I wasn't being ripped-off.

That was certainly the case when I visited Sri Lanka last December/​January. It was no problem at all - just changed up some sterling at Columbo airport on arrival with the state run exchange.
