Formative years spend in Rotterdam, Nederland, and Manchester, England. Electronic rhythm designer for Factory Records' Quando Quango in 80s Manchester (one eclectic album & a bunch of 12" singles), with the Haçienda club as home base. PhD on house music in 90s and the release of Chicago production Search 'Holding Out' in 1993 (with Vince Lawrence), followed by academic publications on dance music and DJ cultures.
Initiated a new degree course, BA(Hons) Music & Sonic Media, at London South Bank University, which is now running in its 5th year (see URL above). As Reader in cultural studies, I'm Research Degrees Coordinator for my department in addition to running the above BA course as Course Director.
Successfully completed supervision of PG Research Projects such as:
- Comparative study of drug use in techno and UK Garage scenes.
- Festival management: Netaudio 06
- Performativity of gender and race in hip hop at The Jump Off.
Examples of current PG supervision projects:
- Renegade Hardware: speed and technological cultures in drum & bass.
- Civil disobedience in online art practices.
- Female performativity in hip hop magazines.
