Thought I'd jump on the review boat with a wee missive to the massiv re
Nomad - no not a typo of a festival review but the restaurant in
Amsterdam that SB recommended..
Well it was quite a funny experience. Took work colleagues and three
indian guests cos the food was mostly veggie.
The front door, not that I know, has the air of a strip joint about it.
i.e not open, painted black, a sort of knock and wait job.
Inside, warm colours, sumptuous decor, well pitched tunes. We walked
along a central corridor with 5 U-shaped 'booths' with faux chainmail
curtains on either side, through to a central room, which had a pergola
type arrangement in the centre (with loads of brass poles as supports,
supporting my original suspicions..) and low deep benches around the
edge. The lighting was very low, dishes and faces hardly recognisable.
We had to have the set menu cos we were a large group.
The food (eventually) was unique and distinctive, fresh tastes, unusual
herbs, delicious breads, a selection of 'cold' dishes followed by 'warm'
dishes, falafel being the only one I could recognise but most of them
interesting and tasty. The belly dancer between courses was
?amusing?/?entertaining? too. The deserts were special, date truffle
chocolates and unfamiliar ice creams, fresh fruits.
It was a bit pricey mind, with beers it was 60€ a head...don't go there
for a quick bite - we were there for 3.5hrs! A tad painful with business
guests but would be a right laugh with mates - and the music was
splendid throughout - a bubbly 'world music' type feel, with some mad
middle eastern stuff interspersed.
Good stuff.
