Well, I'm impressed.
Even though the gallery turned out to be in a
Student's Union, though the fonctionairres had
to have a long conversation before pointing me
at it, and though the door they pointed me at
was locked.
So I ended up with the default location: Club
Gromko, just behind possibly the nicest hostel
in Europe, Celice (the Cells, ex-Yugoslav army
jail done up v Nordic). Metelkova 6, just by
the wrong end of the train station.
Slovenia's in the middle of a traditional-ish
music revival. As in, stumble across a bunch
of duelling acoustic musos, listen for a bit:
"Ah! Irish Romany klezmer - that'll be genuine
Slovene music, then?" "Ja, something like that."
When good, very very good. Like all improv,
when bad, appalling.
Next night, poetry ("Was that about war?" "No,
love and yearning, and everything") followed
by two of the same musos (one from a band called
Terra Folk that played Cambridge and Edinburgh...
"I wish we'd discovered what 'folk' meant in
English English before we chose the name..."
A hundred people, a little dancing, some blatant
snogging - yes, acoustic hippies.
Next, "broken beats" night. Thirty people, max,
standing listening intently to uncompromising
industrial noise from Paris: 240bpm, 300, this
is getting silly... pause, and the beat comes
back as a note. Not exactly dance music unless
you've done a half gram of base. Slovenia not
like that. Hell, a few think, let's try anyway:
one Frenchman, me, and a woman dressed as a
Sufi from Karelia (it works!). Underground, da.
"My name's Dan and I'm from Miami FL and I don't
do this because I want do. I do this because I
have to." More mad hard beats from DJ Doormouse.
And an hon. mention to ATAK video from Paris for
keeping up. "George Bush, [inaudible] is going
to kick your butt!" About a dozen leap to the
floor for that.
I ljke Ljubljana (cty v dsappring vwels).
Don't tell anyone. Your mileage may vary.
Mike
