for record shops check:
http://www.hyperreal.org/raves/nyc/stores.html

this lists most nyc shops

my favouites on that list are dance tracks (best house record shop i've
found, spent an obscene amount everytime i've visited)

and satellite (great stock, pity it'll take u hours to find anything, as
all the stock's in piles on the floor and stuffed in racks, making it
sooo hard to find anything.

a shop that isn't listed is dub spot, this is on 12th between 1st ave
and a. great shop this, this is the shop that your most likely to find
claussell rareties, good selection of house and more eclectic stuff.
well worth checking.

on the techno front, sonic groove on carmine street is very good and has a
large back catalogue

as for bars the lower east side is really happening at the moment with
loads of small cool bars. this is area is north of houston to about 12th
and then from about 2nd ave to a or b. check out citisearch,

http://newyork.citysearch.com/

they list all the bars in nyc by area. bars of the top of my head. alphabet
lounge, drink wise, sapphire (check this on mondays, hosted by adam
goldstone, tiny trendies, great dj and always has good guests),
standard, niva, big bar, wonder bar. just pop the name of the bar in the
search section and it'll give u a write up and location.

for clothes shops try broadway around soho there are lots of clothes, shoe
shops around there. check prince street for some cool shops, pity stussy has
the most arrogant, obnoxious staff i've ever come across. on 5th avenue
downtown, around 18th street there's a club monoco, along with j crew and
banana republic. most of the expensive boutiques and department stores are
uptown on 5th and on madison. for bargains try up in harlem, not that
scary!!!!!! try at around125th i think, the main shopping area, u should
find trainers
cheaper than downtown.

for other shop locations try the free city guides that are in every hotel,
loads of shops advertise in them with discount vouchers.

for clubs check

http://www.undergroundnyc.com/

this has a list of most of the underground house nights going on in nyc on
every night of the week.

my pick of them would be body and soul at club vinyl, hubert st, tribeca.
sunday 4 pm til midnight. best to turn up between 6 and 7 so u don't spent
ages in an empty club, still good tunes though, and it's early enough so u
don't have to queue.

www.bodyandsoul-nyc.com

this is the best club i've ever been to, and probably ever will. unlike most
hyped event, this lives up to the reputation and then totally exceeds it.
never have i experienced a night that came together so much with incredible
music and a wicked diverse crowd that was soooo into the music, with the
refreshing fact that hardly any of them were on drugs, u can't even get a
drink at vinyl, the venue is dry, cliché, but everyone just gets high on the
music. the atmosphere was electric all night. awesome, simply awesome.

other nights to look out for are ron trent at shine on mondays, also on
mondays is adam goldstone's (tiny trendies) night at saphire, this often has
quite big names playing, eg swayzak, mr c have been recently.

on wednesdays it's back to vinyl for dance ritual, lil' louie vega's weekly
night, quality house music, say no more.

fridays bang the party is good

saturday it's back to vinyl again, for the legendary shelter night with
timmy regisford. destiny on saturday's is also good. there's a techno night
called tru skul, don't know if it's still going, but they've had rob hood,
gemini, rolando etc, etc. check citisearch for details

the new york scene changes quite regulary so it's best to have a peek at the
message board on the body and soul site or probably best the undergound nyc
board, all the good parties have messages posted about them there.

Stayed at the Gershwin a couple of years back, cheap'ish, arty and in mid-town.

If you're looking for a bargain try The Bowery Whitehouse, near the village,
under $30 a nite.
