i've had this album for a while now, and it definitely has its moments
but it doesn't sound as fresh as the first one they did. maybe it was
because back then they were a breath of fresh air with the dubbed-out
basic channel meets 2-step menace of gorgon sound and murder style. i
picked up all of their 12"s, even their earlier releases that were more
trad-sounding 2-step with chopped up helium diva vocals.

unfortunately, these days dubstep (or "grime" as rephlex would have you
believe with their cash-in compilations) has been caned to death, in
london at least - and that grungy clipped bass style is more than a
little played out.

tunes like the classic deluxe rerub on this album is still getting lots
of plays from me - just love that floaty almost deep house-like groove
with the muted reese bassline. also into marseilles connection with its
widescreen feel and exquisite production. the far eastern samples lend
an exotic flavour but that only sounds new if you've never been
subjected to loads of downbeat jazzy chillout throughout the nineties.

my main issue with the album is that its almost too polished. it
obviously takes in jungle as a primary influence, something they have in
common with people like mark one. but because the production is so clean
and digital, for an lp that overtly mixes in so many diverse influences,
it somehow turns out sounding very monotone and one-dimensional.

i'd like more filth, more scuzz, more thrills. this isn't the sound of
the streets, this is expensive studio set-ups and knowing musical
references. personally i'd wait for the singles and remixes.
