one of the few things in dance music thats as good as it used to be

...orbital live at brixton academy. oh my crikey. it was 1994 all over
again! only the barechested men had big beer bellies, my best friend was
really chuffed when she found out we were in the circle just in case her
pill didnt work and she needed a nice sitdown, and i had ingested
nothing stronger than a couple of glasses of blossom hill and a vodka
and tonic. and yet, somehow, by the end of the night i felt *fucked*-
with a grin that wouldnt quit, so sweaty i felt like id been dipped in
something, and yes, dried tearstains on my cheeks from when they
casually dropped 'belfast' in as the third track. jeff mills is the only
other person i have ever seen who can make white noise sound so
beautiful and soaked in soul, and an orbital greatest hits set is an
object lesson in how to make clever, funny, heartbreakingly beautiful
machine music.

sweaty chests, ravey hand dancing, water bottle swapping, laughing and
smiling at strangers, ululating with sheer, sheer joy...and that was
during the hour and a half before chime. after the moment when chime
kicked in i will never have to worry what 1989 felt like. utter fucking
deafening madness. and that was in the circle, remember. and i hadnt
taken any drugs. 10 years ago today they played the best live set i
have ever seen- last night, they played one that is easily in my top 5.
there is noone better than orbital when it comes to live dance acts, and
there never will be; noone has ever come close, and thats all there is
to it.
