I saw 'Sideways' last night. The hype, if you've noticed, is big for
this film so my expectations were high. Seven golden globe nominations,
'a small masterpiece', blurts the New York Times, so I was waiting for
this film to knock me down with greatness.
It didn't. It's very good, has some laugh out loud moments (mainly due
to the excellent performance of Thomas Haden Church as Jack), doesn't
get caught in sentimentality and cleverly portrays depressed writer Paul
Giamatti (American Splendor), like his beloved Pinot, as fragile and
delicate, but in the end you want to love the film, but it falls short
and doesn't provide that spark.
It probably /will/ be one of the best Hollywood films released this
year, and will no doubt reap many Oscars, but it's no classic.
cheers, olly

I loved it too. Giamitti is quickly becoming my favourite actor.
