I'm not sure if Pierce Brosnan is one of the luckiest or unluckiest men
on the planet at the moment. He was recently dumped from his lucrative
Bond role by the producers without being told so, he only found out when
the hunt for his successor was trumpeted in the media. In recent
interviews he doesn't seem like happy man with the situation. However,
due to 'Bond' he is now being offered interesting and varied roles with
a plethora of gorgeous female co-stars. The latest film is 'After the
Sunset', and the latest stunning love-interest is Salma Hayek. The film
is a cops-n-robbers buddy action heist comedy, very much in the same
vein as the overrated 'Oceans Eleven' remake from a few years ago.
Brosnan plays a retired never-caught jewel thief called Max Burdett,
living in the lap of luxury with his gorgeous girlfriend Lola (Hayek) in
a sea-side villa on a Caribbean island. The good life changes when an
FBI agent, Stand Lloyd, shows up (Woody Harrelson) who's been chasing
him for seven years. Lloyd tells Burdett that a cruise ship is docking
on the island for a week and is having a exhibition of the last
remaining 'Napoleon Diamond', the only one left that Burdett hasn't
stolen.
The majority of the film is filled with shots of a scruffy looking
Brosnan squinting into the sun with his shirt unbuttoned for the ladies,
or Hayek running around the beach in a tiny bikini for the men. There
isn't much in the way of action, and although some of the comedy
sequences between Harrelson and Brosnan work well and are reasonably
funny, they are few and far between to give the film a true sense of the
'buddy comedy' it is aiming for.
It's an utter steaming pile of cheddar, but it's a reasonably fun
brainless popcorn film that's good to watch on a rainy afternoon. Just
beware the OTT cliched cheese ending, you will be rolling your eyes in
both embarrassment and incredulity. But Hayek is gorgeous, did I mention
that already?
'After the Sunset' is on general cinema release now.
