If he's not bothered about using AirPort/wireless networking then get an
ethernet hub, plug the dektop machine, laptop and printer into it, then
turn on the ethernet port in the 'Network' part of System Preferences on
both machines. Set the printer up using Printer Setup Utility on the
dektop machine, set up the internet connection on the desktop machine,
then turn on Printer Sharing and Internet Sharing in the Sharing part of
System Preferences. The PowerBook should then be able to print and
connect to the internet via the desktop machine.

Alternatively, ditch the USB modem, buy an ethernet ADSL router and
AirPort Express base station, plug the printer into the USB port on the
AirPort Express base station and plug the ADSL router into the ethernet
port on the base station. Get an AirPort Extreme card for the PowerBook
(if it doesn't have one built in) and the desktop machine and bob's your
uncle, with no wires.
