Frequently asked questions: General

What is UK-Dance?

UK-Dance is a community based around dance music culture in the United Kingdom. It operates through a web site with discussions also carried on an e-mail mailing list. We cover clubs, parties, gigs, record shops, radio, records and everything else to do with the dance music scene. ("The Community Charter")

What kinds of music does UK-Dance cover?

All kinds of music that are currently played in the UK's clubs. UK-Dance aims to cover the whole scene so it can follow dance music as it evolves rather than being stuck in specific pigeonholes. In the past people on UK-Dance have generally talked most about underground house, techno, garage, drum 'n' bass and downtempo styles but all genres are welcome and there are fans of most kinds of dance music on the list, even trance.

How do I find out my password?

When you become a member of UK-Dance you will be sent your password in your introductory e-mail. You will need the password to send messages via the web site, to create your member profile or to unsubscribe. If you have forgotten your password you can get it sent to you again from here.

Why does the poll say I have voted already when I haven't?

In order to prevent abuse from multiple voting, the poll system only allows one vote for each IP address. If your computer is behind a firewall (such as in a company) or your ISP uses a web cache (AOL, BT, NTL and many others do) then it may appear to the system that you share your address with other people. Because of this unfortunately only the first person with that address will be able to vote each week.

Why does the site look funny in my browser?

The site has been written to be compliant with web standards, including XHTML/1.0, CSS/2 and JavaScript 1.1. These are supported by the current versions of most major browsers, including Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla 1.3, Netscape 7 and Opera 7 (with some minor issues). On earlier browsers (in particular Netscape 4) you may find that the site does not appear properly - the effort required to support these non-compliant browsers is no longer justified.

What software does this community use?

The mailing list is managed using a modified version of the Mailman list server. Entries in the knowledge store are managed using Movable Type. The rest of the software was written specially for the site.

Who do I contact if things go wrong or I don't understand something?

If you have any problems then you can write to the UK-Dance administrator, Stephen Hebditch, at admin@uk-dance.org. The same address should be used if you have any suggestions of other questions that should be answered in the help section.
