Frequently asked questions: Discussions

How do I contribute?

Messages can be submitted via the web site or by e-mail to uk-dance@uk-dance.org. They will then appear on the web site and be distributed on the e-mail mailing list.

How do I get off the mailing list?

If you no longer wish to receive e-mail, you can unsubscribe over the web here. The same page will also let you switch to being a web-only member, if you wish to continue to contribute via the web site, or change to a different delivery format.

To unsubscribe by e-mail, write to uk-dance-request@uk-dance.org with anything you like as a subject and in the first line of the message body the words

unsubscribe password

If you're sending the message from a different e-mail address from the one you subscribed as, you should instead send the words

unsubscribe password address

If you've tried doing that and it still doesn't work then write to admin@uk-dance.org and you will be unsubscribed manually. Please note though that because of other pressures it can sometimes take a few of days to unsubscribe people manually.

How do I find out my password?

When you become a member of UK-Dance you will be sent your password in your introductory e-mail. You will need the password to send messages via the web site, to create your member profile or to unsubscribe. If you have forgotten your password you can get it sent to you again from here.

Why have I been removed from the mailing list?

Sometimes mail systems along the way screw up and start sending back error messages for a particular subscriber. When this happens our software will automatically remove the address from the mailing list after a couple of days to avoid too many error messages building up here. If you find you've stopped receiving messages from the list then simply resubscribe.

Why hasn't my message appeared?

This could be for one of three main reasons:

How can you get bold, italic, etc. in messages?

Use *asterisks* around a word to get bold, /slashes/ to get italic, _underscores_ to get underlined, <chevrons> for teletype and ^carets^ for superscript. If you start and end a line in your message with a colon then it will appear as a heading. Anything that looks like a URL in your message will be turned into a link and by placing your mouse over most links you will be told the title of the page the link refers to.

Why is the mailing list only available as a digest?

The traffic involved in running a 'live' version of the mailing list can be very large. Because of this it is only available by e-mail as a digest. However, you can still interact in real-time with UK-Dance via the web site.

Is there an archive of discussions available?

Messages from the past 14 days are available on the web site. Previous messages from the list are not publically available as it was felt that this was inappropriate for an of-the-moment, chatty list. However, if a message is felt to be particularly useful — for example containing the answer to a question many other people could ask — then it can be suggested for inclusion in the knowledge store.
