So what gives, does anybody read this anymore and if they do what are they doing now!

It's been many years since this place was a thriving hub of activity, tho I guess most of us were free and single back then, with lots of time on our hands,m the internet wasnt like it is today and access was via things like compuserve or demon model diallup.

As we get older and get partnered up, children arrive, placs like this take a back seat! Am sure we all have the intention to post, but - the opportunity doesnt arise and sadly gets pushed to one side.

Am at work at the moment in Fulwood Park, Preston killing some time - have taken on a 12 month contract with IBM working onsite at the DWP.

Everyone's moved on to other places really - look at the feed of UKD people on Twitter and you'll see that's where a lot of the action is now.

With UKD's 20th anniversary coming up in November, I've been thinking about whether to pull the plug on the current incarnation and instead begin rerunning every message from day one in real time on the site.

well some have ... fwiw i dont think the list of uk dance twitter subs is very "representative of the diverse community".. ie: plenty on here dont use twitter.

With UKD's 20th anniversary coming up in November, I've been thinking
about whether to pull the plug on the current incarnation

now, that would be a shame ... its your ball tho... hey ho.

and instead begin rerunning every message from day one in real time on the site.

now, that would be COOL and top marks for geek skills stephen :)

also.. as an aside .. im bigging up uk dance as a "career influencer" in an interview im trying to write for someone... credit where credit is due big props to uk dance :)

I still think it's a real shame that uk-dance has fallen into disuse. I know people have emigrated to twitter and elsewhere, but uk-dance offered a unique meeting space, and the exchanges on here - and the friendships those discussions spawned - were fantastic. Twitter etc doesn't fulfill any of that.

Would love to hear from any and all old uk-d'ers. :)

i only come on in response to the email i get every so often yes its a shame its gone ive got a few people on facebook and dont do twitter as much as anything else the phenomenon that was rave , dance and clubbing was of its time

in the same way you still see old teds and punks the raver is a threatened species now usually only seen in city centers drinking red stripe im sure the rerun would bring back some viewers would we be able to comment ?be nice to see how atitudes have changed over 20 years i wonder how many of you being home owners would effect your stance on squatters ?some may even own commercial properties, open for raves ? i doubt it anyone wants to face book me im steve barnes

Hello everyone.

Not sure I like the idea of re-running uk-dance again from day 1, Stephen. Ouch!

We should definitely do something spectacular on the 20th anniversary. How might we self combust?

I'm not completely wedded to it as an idea... I just feel that Something Ought To Be Done instead of leaving UKD in its current state of mostly dead with occasional outbreaks of introspection.

Fundamentally, people have moved on - in culture, technology and their lives. I remember talking with Bat at the tenth birthday party and joking even then about how it could be renamed UK-Danced. The fact that UKD hasn't vanished completely twenty years after the movement that kicked it off makes it something of an oddity in the world.

We could embrace the past by doing something with the archive. We could try and do something new to bring people back, like turning it into a group blog for longer content and occasional archive pieces perhaps. We could pull the plug and leave it as a static memorial site to a particular period in history. Or we could just leave it running as it is. I'm open to ideas.

Hello strangers,

Funny enough, I found the sound recording from the Moog party today. Think that was the 16th anniversary!

I'd agree with that, the internet is a very different place in 2012 than is was in 1997 with much harsher consequences for the candid posts people never though twice about back then.

I was in Bali at the start of the year. Amazing place, totally fell in love with it, including the local Gamelan music. Sounds very much like Aphex Twin, Ambient Works Vol 2 era. Best bit was this kid doing a Baris dance (a traditional war dance), that went on for ages with loads of hypnotic loops and drumming.

This isn't my clip but you get the idea.

More Gamelan here, though this has a bit of melody which I didn't hear much of just he guys on the xylophone type things going on forever.

I like the idea of keeping it, as a read-only archive. Its a valuable record of those days, the birth of dance subculture, public internet, and triology. The hit man and her of cyberspace! But not worth the resources to keep it alive in its current format given the other social media options these days. I think we should all be given the option of anonymity and/or to censor some of the things we may have said back then that we might not want to be associated with these days.

Hi Steve,

20 years? Wow. That's a lot of time. thanks for your work.

I must say though, the thought of ukd's back catalogue of messages hitting the web again will at best give some people the willies about whatever candid stuff they posted in their youth popping back up again. It was a different era then, the internet was a sort of seperate medium that people did not think would resurface years later.

I can recall some childish spats on there. others might be embarrsed as 40 somethings with kids & jobs to find a clear history of their class A activities fully visible for the world to see.

fwiw ... i totally disagree... i for one thought that uk dance would be archived for eternity and would be a resource nugget for future researchers and anyone interested in that period of time etc.. otherwise i wouldnt have spent so much time responding to it and laboriously typing and writing stuff.

also.. who cares what you wrote a few years ago.. ? ... everyone changes .. and people understand that.. get over it.

also..  you dont even use your own name who's going to be looking for papa stupid bendy?

harsher consequences ffs get a life tarquin...

Well one thing doesn't change, you're still a prize arsehole.

And I'm happy for that to echo through the ages.

You're right in the sense that no-one should be precious about outbursts from a decade ago. It's no big deal if you spent hours writing drivel about trip hop or trance being.. etc.

What is a real concern though would be the sort of snooping that goes on by employers, or by the less charitable public trying to dig dirt on people who may hold prominent positions. It happens.

Yes you can argue that they asked for it, the internet was always a public medium, but it was a small community back then & pre the web forum days it was only available for a short time. I don't think any student bashing out pill reviews in 95 would have thought about years later when he's got a job, kids, bills to pay.

Plus, who other than seriously saddened would want to revisit all the childish flame wars, personal insults and near libelous stuff that was almost daily fodder at some points? I'm happy to forgot that, commit it to the murky mists.
