Audio geek fest - monitors vs hi fi speakers

Looking to pimp out my new DJ room in the garden. New speakers are required.

Given the choice, would you go for:

Studio monitors like these http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/37567-krk-rokit-powered-6-g2-pair.html

or really nice hi fi speakers like these http://www.whathifi.com/review/BandW-685/

I'll be doing a mixture of mixing and er, listening so not sure how to play it... any tips?

Cheers

I bought a pair of these a month ago, from Sapphires on the Edgeware Road. Take along a few favourite CD's and hear them for yourself, they sound amazing. They're not flat response so will give your music a bit of oompf but they are monitors and the bloke in the shop told me they have a narrower sweet spot.

Btw, the two folk that recommended them to me were jobbing DJ's and apparently Phil Asher uses them too.

Don't buy without having compared to a pair of Yamaha HS80M

Apparently those are nearly 100 quid more expensive than the KRK ones. Have you got em Lord B? Care to comment on the sound?

2 votes for monitors though. Could look like the end for my treasured Rotel pre and power amp combo...

I've got a pair of the HS50Ms, which are the smaller versions, as the HS80Ms wouldn't fit on my desk! I'm very happy with the sound. Dolphin sell the larger HS80Ms at 40 quid more than the KRK ones you mentioned, not 100 quid more. I've heard the larger HS80Ms in a small studio and was blown away. You'd think you were listening to a set of speakers costing a grand. Great bass response, considering their size. BUT I'VE NOT HEARD THE KRKs, so, as they say, do your own research and take my views with a pinch of.

Reeeewind! Finally got to hear these Yamaha boys up against some Genelecs today. They definitely kick serious arse. The KRK ones were outclassed. Genelecs were mildly better than the Yamahas but were twice the price. Roll on Christmas...

Now all I need to do is choose a DJ CD player. I am thinking the only way to go is Pioneer CDJ1000 of some sort? DJ

Glad my circumspect recommendations proved to be valid.

To be honest, I am disappointed with the build quality of Pioneer CDJ decks, and are CDj1000s (£1k+!) are any different in build quality to their predecessors?
