Sorry, I just don't get this compilation at all. I thought that La Roux, whilst not really my cup of tea, was an original artist with a well founded reputation.  I don't understand the artistic motivation behind this release.

I've never been fond of cover version albums, and this is just 80's pap. Bleugh.

It's a DJ mix CD. Are only men allowed to release them?

Bleugh.

It's not an album of cover versions.

Loving it. Good track selection, largely unobstructive mixing, and some great subtle seques. The Japan cover of "I Second That Emotion" was always fantastic, and there's more obscure stuff on here that deserves reappraisal (such as Freur, who I don't recall being as good as this). Didn't think that the Fever Ray track would work, but it does, and definitely didn't think that Doris Troy would work, but it does.

Yet this doesn't really sit right. It's billed as La Roux, who are a duo. There's no "mixed by" credit. Do they DJ tag team style? I very much doubt it. The Cd cover contains no notes. Track-by-track essay by Ben Langmaid available on the website. Which leads me to think that he mixed it, and there is a hint of his preferences winning out to Elly's on the track selection ("Suffer the Children" rather than a track from "Songs From the Big Chair"). But a photo of Elly on the glossy CD sleeve. The DJ industry is so male-dominated it's a shame that Elly wasn't able/allowed/didn't want to to mix it, and it's a shame that Renaissance are selling this as if she did.

Or maybe it's just a sign of the 2nd-generation mix CD, selection by committee, mixed with software rather than decks by more than one unnamed mixers, and engineered. The death of the author-DJ (with no apologies to Barthes).

I dunno u know Lord... I know that La Roux are 2 people but they kinda imply its just Elly on the website... ("La Roux – aka Elly Jackson") then go on to say "we announce La Roux has curated and mixed the latest volume of Sidetracked" - so kinda hint that she did it. She seems pretty clued up.. cant see any reason why it wouldnt be her.. esp after the blurb on the site? Was curious about this.. defo will chk it following the positive review

That's what I though, but if you look on the Renaissance Microsite you can see that the album notes come from Ben and not Elly ...think it was a joint project.

What you think of her Rolling Stones cover?

I also reckon that it was a joint project - in that I suspect that Ben mixed the album and Elly did the photo shoot for the cover sleeve...

Not a big fan of the Rolling Stones cover, but then I'm not really a big Stones fan.

Cheers for the replies, I've been reliably informed that both Ben & Ellie had a hand in the track selection.

What artists would you like to see doing 'Sidetracked' Renaissance compilations where they compile tracks that have inspired them?

Love to hear what Fever Ray would club together in a mix like this and maybe The XX too?

I had little doubt that both Ben and Elly had a hand in the track selection, I was querying who mixed it. And we still don't know.... Maybe you could find out, as you seem to work for the label, or know someone who does....

DJ Derek, Paul Morley, Kevin Rowland, Craig Charles are four random names that spring to mind.

I like to think that it was UKD's incisive questioning regarding the La Roux mix album that pushed the label over the edge.

I'd contend that when a once huge imprint such as Renaissance resorts to 'Back to Mine' type compilations of cheap-to-license 80's tracks then the writing is already on the wall in terms of its demise.

Albums and comps are not the cash-cows they used to be. These days, the more sussed labels simply view them as promos to sell concert tickets. Super clubs have been in decline for some time which makes Renaissance's choices even more limited.

It seems that all the money is now in the likes of Cowells' TV karaoke shows.

IMO, it's high time for another musical revolution on the scale of punk rocks' utter annihilation of 1970's glitter-glam which, incidentally, is entirely synonymous with Cowells' contemporary fancy-dressed, auto-tuned, cheap to make and easy to sell  Pap Idle, or X-Sphincter manufactured dross that dominates the kids market today.
