Meeting someone in Scouseland for a day and looking for somewhere nice to eat...

we're starting off around the docks but willing to move about a little but maybe not too far.. but I guess the Docks are pretty central-ish.

any recommendation? a sucker for aesthetics, nice surroundings would be a plus too ;0) but the food's by far the top of the priority list.

Just asking cos I know if someone came to Manchester they'd never find the best eateries.. Hoping there might be similar gems tucked away in Liverpool

Rule #1: Don't bother with any of the Albert Dock places, all rubbish/overpriced.

Best area for restaurants on that side of town is between Pier Head and Castle St. Here's a selection, off the top of my head...

Sakura, Exchange Flags behind the Town Hall - Japanese/Tepanyaki, only opened a month ago, very good food but very expensive, and very WAGy at weekends (it's also a cocktail bar).

Piccolino, Cook St - prob the best Italian food in town.

Noble House, Brunswick St - new, haven't eaten there yet but heard good things.

Blakes, Hard Days Night hotel, North John St - really top notch food. Possibly THE best restaurant around here.

San Carlo, Castle St - horrific 'aspirational' crowd spoiled it for me (a friday night) but pretty good Italian food in different surroundings. Probably ace if it's not busy.

Merchants, Castle St - inside an old bank, huge ceilings etc., good enough food.

Matou, upstairs Mersey Ferry Terminal, Pier Head - decent 'pan asian' food with a cracking view over the river.

There's another cluster of good restaurants around Hope St but that a bit of a walk from down there...

Failing that Jamie Oliver has open a place in Liverpool One and there was a queue of 100+ waiting outside last Friday!! However there's no way he's getting any of my money so your guess is as good as mine.

Ended up going Jamies place. noticed it as we were passing. gorgeous grub, super cheap. 25 quid for 2 mains and drinks!

You Northern people are so funny.

I would expect to spend £25 on just a bottle of wine and you got food and wine.

Sesh.
