Request for assistance

Here's my brief. I am currently looking for 22 tracks. In 4:4 between 120-125bpm, without much syncopation. Techno, not house, minimal, but not just jacking beats. It needs to be bassy and deep. Preferably no vocals. Some acid house is working, but much of it isn't. I want dark sounds, low frequencies. Perhaps european and not american - that's what seems to be working. The music should be weird, not straight, but still sexy. Nothing too Ibiza friendly, but nothing too totally wacky. Nothing that makes you want to spontaneously smile really. Sexy, but in a strange way. Finally, and importantly, I want there to be very little build up at the start of the track, and not much in the way of a breakdown for at least 3 minutes. I will let you know what it's for once I've got the tracklisting. Any suggestions?

You are talking - possibly - right up my street.
Maurizio - M4 (M) - very bassy, relentlessly tracky... very sparse though
Basic Channel - phyllypstrakII (Basic Channel) - tracky tech/house simply does not get any better
Francois K - Road of Life (Quiet Village Sound Factory Dub) - awesome midpaced tracky clarion-call robotics
Octave One - Eniac (430 West) - bit fast for your 125 bpm ceiling but might be perfect with a pitch control
Also worth checking the remix 12" of "Expression in E-Dub" by Marino Berardi on MB Recordings - the "Expression in Beats" remix (side D) is an astonishing wander in to the depths - deep, bassy, absorbing, tracky, tracky, tracky... can't find it on Youtube though.
What am I thinking - impossibly tracky and sexy - Kenlou "Sensational Beats" (Masters at Work). Here - no apologies, as b@ used to say. It is lacking bass, and it might make you smile though...
I'll see if any more occur to me today... let me know if this is the right track.
cheers,
dave

Doesn't that lot fail the "Perhaps european and not american" test?

Apart from the Francois K, Basic Channel, Maurizio and Marino Berardi tracks - you're right, the Europeanishness of the other two is questionable :)

You're right, as-fucking-usual :) ... in my defence it's been a long while since I listened to any house or techno, s'all crappy indie guitars for me these days!

Nice one Dave, you're on the right track apart from that MAW remix of Kenlou, which was too housey. The Maurizio track was spot on - so more recommendations in that area please!

It only has to sound european - I'm not checking passports or anything.
Riddle - get on this thread now please.

Ah ok so the remit is tracks of the same style and quality as M4. When someone makes another one, I'll let you know! :)
Seriously though apart from the timeless genius that is M4, if tracks along the even-paced thudding 90s Berlin Basic-Channel but-not-shit-copies vibe are going to work for your purposes, here's some ideas:
Maurizio - M5 (watch out for this one, the kick's all on 2 and 4!), M6, M7.
Deep Chord - Departure, DC14,
Rod Modell - Kingston, Avionics, Space Age Mythology (killer groove!)
Murmur - Magnetic
Claro Intelecto - Chicago, Above
Now, if you can take all of them and spin them endlessly into a 17-hour mix, then you are Nic Larsen and I claim my £5 :)
cheers,
dave

17 years more like it :P
Claro Intelecto def cool.. but yeah I'm mostly out of the loop on new stuff Paul's the man with his finger on the pulse.. maybe some Losoul on Playhouse but you might run headlong in to some twisted syncopation going down that route.
btw despite what Mr Anderson says, it's all about M4.5
The entire Chain Reaction, Rhythm and Sound, Basic Channel and Burial Mix back catalogues, 4 decks, a couple of mixers and a shedload of two should about cover it.
This aint really helping is it..

Oh please! :) Look, M4/5/6 are all genius, but it's clear that M4 (.0!) is by far the best...

Thanks for all the suggestions on this. The project was to devise a DJ set for a catwalk show. Here is my final tracklisting. After some preliminary research, I discovered that catwalk models do their stuff at 120 paces per minutes (115 for the men), so all tracks were played at this tempo. My final tracklisting was
By The Time I Get To Venus by The Juan MacLean
Road of Life by François K. Road of Life
Chronologie Part 6 by Jean-Michel Jarre
Baby Kate (Sascha Funke Remix) by Heartthrob
Beyond the Creek by Losoul
Sunday Prayer by Ricardo Villalobos & Jay Haze Mellow Dee
Mellow Dee by Ricardo Villalobos & Jay Haze
Caminando (feat. Raquel Wolff) by Rebolledo
Insect by Fold
Citylights by Lars Leonhard
Quadrant Dub I by Basic Channel
Rosenrød by Diskjokke by Rosenrød
Vantage Isle (DC Mix II) by Deepchord
Batman (T.V. Theme) by Joel McNeely & Royal Scottish National Orchestra Lush by Orbital
Subtraction by Conforce
Phuture Jacks by Phuture (DJ Pierre/Spanky)
Dancing In Draut by Feel Good Production
Up the Beach by Losoul
Hide Me (Rory Phillips Tom Tom Dub) by The Golden Filter
Daten Raten by Extrawelt
Big Fun (Agoria Remix) by Inner City
Intro was theme to Mulholland Drive (Lynch/Badalamenti) and the finale was One More Time by Daft Punk.

Sounds like a tough assignment, especially with all that research :)
Looks like a good track listing, any chance you can you mix this down on Abelton (if you have it) and post it?
