sigh! it shows how lifeless ukd has become when no one responds to this.
i find it really hard to deal with the track. if it's for real it's so extraordinary it blows my mind, but i can't help thinking it's some kind of hoax....
the track is really growing on me. love the last little section. shame there's not a few more minutes of it.
anyway – love the fact it was an injun that invented acid house :)

Not so much lifeless, just struggle to find time to get on. But I thought there were way too many posts before, so I'm not totally unhappy with the new volume, as long as it doesn't die... as long as but 100 of us remain alive etc etc.
As for this track, I'm calling bullshit on it. 1982? Recorded on what, exactly? And more to the point, what's making the sounds - listen to the synth noises ffs! And as if that wasn't enough, sequenced on what, in 82? There's a lot going on, and the timing is utterly bang on. In 1982. And the recording quality is superb. Bullshit!
If it was 1982, then I want to know what gear was used!
cheers,
dave

Would the defendant please rise before the Court of House Music and put his left hand on the Kraftwerk back catalogue.
Must say, it does have the whiff of a windup/hoax.

Be interested to find out whether this is a spoof or not. If it is, it's clearly fooled the editors of The Guardian, and Louis is unlikely to work for them again!. I'm less suspicious of the 303 sounds on the track (the alleged date of release is only a few months before Orange Juice's "Rip It Up", which is the earliest track I have with a 303 on it), than I am of the 909 kick drum, which wasn't released until the mid 1980s.

Most seem to think it is Rephlex Records/Aphex twin up to their tricks.

I'm not 100% sure any more - but I'd be very very suprised if it was 82. The 303 and drums are all possible - it says in the Guardian article he used an 808 and a 303, which could be sync'd together so that fits. I'm not sure on the kick drum, it's not totally 909ish, you'd need someone with direct 808 experience to call that one. What I don't get is all the sequenced sounding other keyboard parts - how the hell were they all recorded in time? There's at least 2 parts running in perfect time with the drum machine, and I don't get what they are. Then there are the little chords that keep wibbling in the background every couple bars - sequenced, or played manually?
Strangely enough the case for the defense would point to the noise entering at 4:13... clearly an arpeggiated synth that's not sync'ed at all. It's really close for about 10 seconds, but from then on it's running more and more ahead of the beat, and is miles out by the time the fadeout starts. Clearly not sync'd.
Hmmm. If it's a hoax, it's very well thought out. If it's genuine, it's beyond belief!

Taking a listen to the full LP now and it really does feel like a Richard James project with south Asian influences. The track-listing above 'feels' Aphex Twin too.
Plus can you seriously imagine such a project would escape any notice for nearly 30 years?

Hmm.. I did a search for said Mr. Singh when this first popped up and the first and the only thing that came up was an Indian hockey but since this "fan page" has appeared... even has a download. Musically, this feels like it could be authentic - I think all of this could have been written back then esp. by an Bollywood- (ive fond memories of old Bollywood funk and have managed to find some of the best stuff over the years) but its the production that makes me unsure. Yeh it's simple as hell but things like the depth of the 808 kick are much fuller than I'd have expected someone to engineer back then.. its as big sounding as 80's electro and I suppose I feel surprised it sounds as good as it for something apparently so old... hope the truth comes out!

Dave, the JP8, 808 and 303 use Sync24 - not exactly exactly predecessors to MIDI but Roland's own form of syncing before MIDI was developed. JP8 had a brilliant little arpeggiator section too

The Gramaphone Company of India has no mention of Charanjit Singh in its back catalog list.
I checked out ECSD 2912 and it is suspiciously (or intentionally) not amongst their catalogue numbers.
The plot thickens

well not really, it could all be part of setting up the back story. there is an entry for a Charanjit Singh in the PRS database, for a track that was used on a Demon Bollywood comp by Demon a few years back. but that database is populated by data from labels so again, it doesn't really verify anything
I think the details of the guy (william sharkey) who registered that domain is the biggest clue it may be fake, do a search for him and you'll find he graduated in music business management recently, and has a few clips of electronic music that he has produced...

Did a quick search for anything related to William Sharkey & Rephlex and it lead straight back to this post :-)
wow, this is pretty cool. i suppose it could be faked but to me it sounds fairly authentic, i think this could have easily been made in 82. i buy that's an 808 for the kick as well. the lead could have been played by hand, there are people who can play that scarily accurate, especially seasoned session players like this guy apparently was...
