interesting text, but the track doesn't particularly do it for me. not in the way, say, love can't turn around does

My brother bought me a copy of The House Sound of Chicago Vol I for my 14th party. It had Jack your body, Move your body (The House Music Anthem), Mystery of Love, Like this etc etc.
For some reason 'Mystery of Love' always stood out for me. It sounded other wordly. I am not really a fan of Robert Owens vocals but on this track they sound sooo right.
I could quite easily do without ever hearing 'Move your body' again but I still have a place in my heart for 'Love can't trun around'.
The 'Dub can't trun around' (no pun dub :-) ) is my fave mix. For a dub it contains a shit load of vocals. Daryll Pandy just goes mad from about 4:03. Camp as a row if tents. Love it.
I also remember them doing it on TOTP. Farley stood at the back on his keyboards and Darrly Pandy in a blue sequin suit, rolling around on the floor screaming his lungs off and throwing his shoes into the audience.
H.O.U.S.E as fuck :-) and my first real intorduction into black Amreican gay club culture.

It's not Mikeydoollee's favourite:
"This is a really crap record, and to say that it has anything to do with the birth of house music is okay, I guess, but doesn't say much for a really terrible era of music. The synth line is out of time and the reverbed hand claps are not particularly unusual or ground breaking for the time. Few stores stocked 12 inches in the US at the time, so saying it reached the top ten is like saying Pop Idol stars have top ten hits – in actual fact 12" record sales were so low as to be meaningless. The vocal is terrible and could only be described as soulful by someone on acid, which is to say someone in a state of mental illness. In many ways house music was responsible for condemning a couple of generations of gay men to bad drugs and the resulting unsafe sex, and codifying that as a lifestyle. House music could be reimagined properly and a history developed, but it will have to take into consideration more than this lame pile of drum-machines in the on position."
Aww, bless ;o)

I much prefer it to "Love Can't Turn Around" as I find the Pandy vocals just too cheesy, a bit too Hi-NRG. Interestingly, Hi-NRG is rarely mentioned in histories of dance music, and is in many ways the missing link between disco and house music.

That Hi-NRG has been consigned to the memory-hole and is rarely mentioned is most likely down to this:
I'd also wager that it contributed to a most pronounced spike in homophobia in the weeks and months following its release.

Well this is nothing particularly like Hi-NRG or the original Chicago tracks, but it is pure Chicago house, which is my excuse for mentioning it.
Insanely brilliant track. Jacks like an absolute motherfucker. Detroit, Space, Car Factories? Yer arse - get the drum machines on and let's get rocking. Come back early 90s Relief Records!

The 90's sound is big again in London.
Azari & III - Reckless with your love. Just check the riff at 50 seconds. Pure E vibe. and it has bloody vocals :-)

That's a tune! not sure how it passed me by.
This reminds me of the late 80's and mid 90's.

Do you really think so? I think it's deep and funky as fuck. Relief is one of my all-time favourite labels, so much good stuff. A lot of it sounds a bit off the wall, occasionally over-fast with too much swing, and the drums are driven through various stages of distortion, but then you hear it over a PA, and.... wooooo!
Relief classics for Thursday, and this is before you even start on Green Velvet, Gemini, bumpin sister house label Cajual...
Lester Fitzpatrick - Rush Hour
Green Velvet - Off The Hook
Gemini - For The Crazy
Boo Williams - Midnight Express
Louis Bell - Dance with me
cheers,
Dave

They had another out last year as well. Complete with Robert Owens style vocal. Video is dirty so watch out if you view it at work :-)
