Music to make you melt
As well as my rave past I love the slower end of music too... I guess it comes with the "come up" – there has to be an opposite to balance things out... I thought I'd had it all... Knowing that pretty much everyone on this list is a super-passionate music lover, I'm sure you all have friends/people who go out of their way to play you that amazing record that'd change ur life just by hearing it....
Most of my CDs have a certain amount of energy and is usually electronic... so I knew there is bound to be loadsa music Ive missed.... but I thought maybe music from around the world... not UK bands.. a good example is AR Rahman... Ive been a fan of his work since hearing the soundtrack to Bombay – (he score Slumdog recently) and i never watch or listen to Indian based music unless it is religious (sorry but it does something for me i cant quite explain) also Nasrat Fati Ali Khan... same effect.
Anyway.. where was i? Yes, music that makes you melt... stuff like Manuel Göttsching, Assasins of Sound, K&D's stuff amd older melodic stuff like Snappiness.. lovely chilly music. I thought I'd done a good job of gathering all the best mellow music in the world on my computer... until... someone played me a Cocteau Twins track the other day.
I simply cannot believe the words, production and music in the track This Mortal Coil. Maybe it was the setting/context/mood/lighting/ambience... fuck knows. Who cares. This grabbed me by the heart, dragged me to the speakers and pressed my face hard againsts the bass grill... at which point i was rendered incapable of moving ;-) and even now I struggle to hum its melody without it making my heart pound with disbelief.
I'm sure all you guys know it already... I'm great at being about a decade late on things that are good ;0 but when they're this good, it simply doesnt matter. Ageless. Timeless. Faultless.
If you know it already, you lucky bastard for having this all this time. If you don't, you even luckier bastard. I hope it has the same effect on you as it did on me.
All that bollox just for one record eh? Sorry, if i seem to be cloggin up UKD with personal rants and links about shite but this was worth it... in case you missed the title:-

An old gf introduced me to them via 'sunburst and snowblind', back in (egad) 1985. At the time I found it overly ethereal and a bit 'breathy' in a clannad/enya style, but 'Another day' from Mortal Coil, the Roy Harper cover, got under my skin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6vW2uWsro0. Kate Bush and Peter Gabiel did another version but it lacked the poignancy of the original IMO..

If you like that, get the first two albums by This Mortal Coil, a group formed by acts signed to 4AD (inc Cocteau Twins) in the mid to late 1980s, and put together by label supremo Ivo. Some of my favourite music. You will not regret it!

FYI, it's a cover version of a Tim Buckley song, found on the first This Mortal Coil album. An absolute classic.

Kangaroo of the album is a fave of mine as well.
The Tim Buckley original sounds best in the live version taken from the Monkees show :-)
Oh and Sudds the This Mortal Coil version has long been regarded as an electronic classic. It is where the Chemical Brothers stole loads of samples for (suprisingly) Song to the Siren.

The original This Mortal Coil (It'll End In Tears) is an absolute classic, my favourite of the two. I had a bit of an addiction to the 4AD label back in the 80s, some great albums, I'll be digging them out.
BTW the other singer on Song To The Siren is Lisa Gerrard, who was one half of Dead Can Dance. I have almost all of their CDs and they're all good, but you might start by listening to stuff from mid 80s, e.g. Spleen And Ideal or Within The Realms Of A Dying Sun.

i felt unsure about both of them at first but the second goes on to some reall amazing and bizarre sounds doesnt it? The Acid Houser in me was bound to get in to that one! defo never heard it b4. Assuming it is Persian by tht title and tho the video of the first track might seem like pretentious arse at times I loved the imagery.... i like the tune but I found some of his "expressions" (non facial) brilliant. nice one... Bet you could spend your whole life looking for great music and never come to the end of your journey ;0
I forget sometimes that my childhood was JUST electronic music. All the underground electro and new romantic music out there... but missed everything else unless it was pop and whilst this might seem great there are some bands that i have only discovered in the last 5 years... one of the best of those bands is The Beatles. I could cover my bedroom with posters i'm so in awe at times... and i have not seen any Beatles FILMS either. Before anyone turns up at my work and slaps me round the head.. I know. I know... It's all on a "todo" list – working hard to get down it ;0

you are bloody joking arent you? Lisa "Gladiator" Gerrard. Cocking 'ell. Those 2 were in the same band?!?!?! FMSW! (i say fuckmesideways so often i thought an acronym would do this time)
thanks for the info, let alone the music.

Actuall there are 3 albums: It'll End In Tears, Filigree and Shadow and Blood. Blood is pretty patchy but still has some lovely bits.
I have all of these on vinyl and the Vaughan Oliver/23 Envelope sleeve designs are a thing of wonder.
4AD were a fantastic label for a good long while. From Bauhaus and Nick cave to Pump Up the Volume is quite a track record.

Yes, that's her. If you like her voice then definately check out DCD. The guy who sings with her (Brendan Perry) also has a fabulous voice. BTW they're an electronic free zone :)
Lisa also features on several track on the soundtrack CD of the movie The Insider. Well worth a listen!

Word, some of those sleeves were awesome, 4AD made me want to design record sleeves and at the same time not bother as I knew I'd not be able to match them!
I always wanted to try and get a copy of this –
but it's never been in stock on amazon or anywhere else that I've searched, not even sure if it actually made it into print...

Mmm... cheers for that, Blood had slipped past me unnoticed. I reckon I'd been bitten by the rave thing by then and lost the wider focus. I'll have a listen.

ive a mate who is a massive fan and has been telling me about her for ages but i onl listen to it when he is over – usually getting a bit mashup – so not taken much in – things'll change soon.. feck.. more for the todo list ;0
cool. ta for tips.
B the way... in case you havn't heard it.. personally find this (virtually unheard of record) equally as good... i sent it to facebook a while ago... done loads of hunting for them but very little ... she has a Myspace but refuses to reply ;-0
Blows my head off this tune. Sorry for the file sharing badness if u are against it but noone seems to have heard this and the only way ppl can hear it is to give it away. i promise to pull it down at somep0int but only after ive seen it has been d/l by many UKDers ;0 totally love this tune. about 11 years old... Assassins Of Sound who i mentioned in earlier post. track is called Slipping In And Out Of Consciousness. Be sure to "save as" if u like... you'll never find it anywhere! Ive tried.
