Sequencers and DJing

Ok so I was doing something at work today, which made me think - what a load of complete tosh software is for doing music work.  I mean, I know it works well sometimes, but really - does it have to be so involved and arcane?

So that got me to wondering, what do people use for DJing and (for those that produce their own tunes), for sequencing/production?  Would the likes of Suddi, Dub, Iain, Parley, Ravi, anyone else, fancy participating in a rolling list just to see what comes out?  For interest, I'm gonna stick in brackets afterwards the reasons why I use what I use.

DJing
Dave A - Vinyl via Technics only (physical interaction with medium)

Production
Dave A - Logic on PC (just what I'm used to)

If noone else can be arsed adding themselves into the list, then no probs, but it just occurred to me it might be interesting to see a snapshot of ukd music software preferences...

cheers,

dave

dub KULT – live (instant remixing, layering, fx, freedom)

Production

dub KULT – Logic 8 on OSx (recent version is sooo much better than anything before – not perfect, but getting to be the ultimate fusion of cubase and protools, great tweakability, sound, flexiblity) dub KULT – Live for time stretching, instant loops, inspiration

V8 is the first version of Logic ive used. Couldnt go near Cubase again... i feel like a traitor after all these years- close to 20! but it blows Cubase out of the water... god Steinberg must be losing some serious business to Logic and Live

Digital DJing (once in a year now) - Acid

Last time in a club I used 1210s and Serrato tho. I still have my Vestax PDX-D3s and Intimidation Blue and a new mixer and Serrato are on the top of my to-buy list when I finally have my flat all sorted.

Production - FL Studio Pro with loads of synth plug-ins and Soundforge for samples.

So if you had to split it into "DJing" and "Live", what goes where?

Or do you only do full-on live/dj mashups with all that gear?

This could be interesting if everyone keeps adding...

They are all hooked up to the big mixer desk so it is possible to have everything running at the same time and yeah we do jam with everything on. We've even used music played in a browser as a sound source.

It tends to be just one big practice session, like yesterday we had a lappy running some loops over and over, about four hour in I went over to the Nord and did the bassline and one pad, we kinda call it "living inside" the tracks. We then go back and tidy up. I should point out we have no either side of our studio :)

5.5, innit :)

To be honest, the constant updating drives me mental.  I'd still be on Cubase v2 on the Atari, but swapped to Logic on PC because I was trying to work with another guy via email that was using it.

I do love being able to record audio, and the automation on Logic does kick arse, but I do find it a bit brain-heavy to drive.

I mean, I used probably 20% of the power of Cubase 2 on the ST, and I'm using probably about 4% of the features of Logic 5.5 on the PC.  Why in the name of fook I'd need *more* features is beyond me - more features, less intuitive, less music getting done.  That's one of the reasons I'm genuinely interested in how this will pan out...

cheers,

Ok, getting there - I've summarised as below, please let me know if I've misrepresented.  Who else - Ravi?  Parley?  Who else DJs and/or produces?

cheers,

dave

i use more of logic 8 than logic 7 because it's that much more intuitive.

Dj'ing:

Technics 1200s/1210s and (occasionally) CDJ's

Dj'ing – Preferably CDJ's. My vinyl sounds crap these days and everything I buy is digital

Radio Show – Ableton Live with a midi controller and decks/cdj's plugged into a line via a bog standard 2 channel mixer.

Technics & vinyl for DJing (otherwise it aint DJing ;)

Used to use Logic 6 on Mac OS9 and a bunch of analogue & digital hardware but didn't find it productive at all, especially when trying to record and playback audio – freezes, crashes, screen redraw issues etc. Really want to get on to OS X and Logic 8 just need some funds.

DJ: Traktor 3 + midi controller, or 2 x 1210s, depending on the mood.

Oops bit late here...

DJing, would be Live if I did it :)

Production, now Live all the way. Got shut of Cubase SX, after years of using Cubase 5, I just didn't get on with its successor

DJing – used to be just Vinyl & Technics only but now have a Torq XPonent and recently tried some CDJs, about 10 years after everyone else :)

My DJ-bunker-come-garden-shed is well into the planning stage so could be producing tunes by say 2015? No rush I guess.
