Ok, getting there - I've summarised as below, please let me know if I've misrepresented. Who else - Ravi? Parley? Who else DJs and/or produces?
cheers,
dave
DJing
Dave A - Vinyl via Technics only (physical interaction with medium)
dub KULT – Ableton live (instant remixing, layering, fx, freedom)
Martin Dust - Vinyl via Technics, Ableton Live
Iain - Vinyl via Vestax, SerratoProduction
Dave A - Logic on PC (just what I'm used to)
dub KULT – Logic 8 on OSx (tweakability, sound, flexiblity), Live (time stretching, instant loops, inspiration)
Suddi - Logic 8 on Mac
Martin Dust - Cubase, Ableton, Acid, Soundforge
Iain - Fruityloops Studio, Soundforge
Am quite amused that my inexpert fumbling on Ableton could be viewed as production, but I shall add my bit:
DJ-ing - I only use decks cos all my stuff is on vinyl and my preferred medium is vinyl just because it is nice and real. That said I cannot mix and tend to go with varied transitions from "slam it across from the end of one track to the start of another" to the more artistic "leave a pause for dramatic effect and then slam on the next track."
Making mixes - cos I can't mix for real, but do like the idea of doing my own mixes, I will use Ableton Live to make my own mix cds. The 2 best things about Ableton are the way the beat markers work which means you can mix pretty much any type of music cos it will "straighten out" wonky beats on tracks with live drummers; secondly the interface is very well thought out and you generally don't need to go through several levels of menus to do what you want. A very well designed piece of software.
Production - I don;t really do any production though I have done a few re-edits of disco tracks using Ableton Live. Again is pretty good to use.
Any issues with my use of Ableton are really donw to the fact I'm not very muscial and my artistic talent is rather limited - but I do like to play about and Ableton is great for that.
